OTHER INITIATIVES OF SNEHALAYA

Relief Service at Kodagu: During the recent 2018-19, monsoon created havoc in Kodagu, a beautiful city. Nature’s wrath counted upon several families. There were heavy landslides and as a result houses, land and almost everything was lost. The families had even lost some of their members. In such a situation, Snehalaya rushed to multiple spots to cater their service, and provide basic things such as food, water, warm clothing, tents, and medicines. Flood Relief Campaign:

Relief Service in Kerala: When the flood-related crisis hit the state of Kerala, Snehalaya dispatched bed sheets, blankets, food and water to the affected areas through a large number of volunteers.

Medical assistance: Health issues are a major concern to the poor as well as for the single-earning members. Several applications, referrals and individual requests for medical assistance are received at Snehalaya. A few cases lying in the hospitals for months together were directly attended. Cancer patients, kidney dialysis patients, heart patients, accident patients and paralyzed individuals are helped. Snehalaya is happy to note that many lives are saved through the timely intervention. To date, more than 150 such major medical cases are taken care of financially by Snehalaya and in particular by Joseph Crasta.

Corona Pandemic Out Reach Mission: The unexpected lockdown imposed by the Government in the month of March on account of the Corona Pandemic took everyone by surprise.  Snehalaya took up this challenge as an opportunity to reach out to the needy. Snehalaya had an earlier experience of reaching out to the needy in difficult situations during the floods of Kerala. Several selfless volunteers joined hands and Snehalaya plunged into action in the month of March. The volunteers reached out to more than 65 villages covering around 7,000 people.

The team started the mission by creating awareness among the people regarding the coronavirus by helping them to take precautions against the virus. Snehalaya arranged food kits and distributed them to the needy. In due course, several houses were identified by the volunteers, which were not safe for human habitation. Some of them were thatched huts, pleasant tic-covered roofs with pathetic living conditions. A few of these families had school-going children, adolescent girls with no toilets, no electricity, no water supply, and ailing elderly people with no financial support to sustain.

Free Ambulance Service: Mangalore is a hub for multiple things. Education, Medical fields, Hotel Industries, Tourism, etc. Due to heavy construction works in the coastal belt, harbour and fishing jetty provisions, agricultural labour needs for estates, attract a lot of migrants to the beautiful coastal city. Many face hurdles during their stay. Accidents, sicknesses and other natural casualties put these migrant workers in a helpless situation. Several lives are lost due to many reasons. These poor families are personally attended by Snehalaya for food, medicines and even to attend on them in several cases. If the deaths occur, the body is transported to its native place in Karnataka free of cost. These services usually go unnoticed but give a soothing feeling when the task is accomplished.
